In rural Colorado, as in many rural areas, economic opportunity is limited. For young women without means of attaining collegiate education, lacking income-earning opportunities and raising children in geographic and social isolation, cycles of poverty prevail. In an effort to end the cycle while building community and encouraging creativity, EarthArt Institute is starting Women’s EarthArt Village Enterprises (WEAVE). WEAVE will partner elder women artists with young women artists in intergenerational mentorships and apprenticeships in experiential, action-based learning programs. Their goal is to become sustainable by selling their art. WEAVE is one program of EarthArt Institute, which seeks long-term, sustainable eco-social change through educational programs and cultural events in sustainable community living and the arts while promoting protection and regeneration of their natural rural environment.
